Sex Offenses In Our Culture

Sex offenses are strange or our culture is strange about sex offenses. Our culture has an easier time with murder than sex crimes. Why do people get more upset over a sex crime than a purely violent crime? I don’t know but if you are accused of a sex crime you need a lawyer who keeps his head.

The Worst Kept Secret

Sex is the worst kept secret in our society. In fact it’s not a secret but we pretend it is. We try not to think about our parents having sex, our children having sex, our friends having sex or just about anybody having sex. Maybe that is why sex crimes hit so hard in our culture: It forces us to not only recognize sex in our lives but forces us to see it in a negative way. A good criminal defense lawyer with experience with sex crimes is not thrown off by this fact. They know how to analyze the facts and think clearly just as if it was a robbery or a drug possession crime. The facts and circumstances are what are important, not how people respond to hearing the accusations.

Get Used to It

It can be very uncomfortable to talk about sex especially with a stranger. And your newly hired criminal defense attorney will be a stranger. If you are accused of rape, forcible sodomy, sex abuse or other sex crimes, don’t be surprised if your lawyer speaks very bluntly about the offense and sex in general. In fact, it’s a good sign that your lawyer has gotten over the stigma and is ready to focus on the facts of your case, not the cultural implications.
